Nestled along Ball's Creek in Eastern Catawba County, Murray's Mill awaits the visitor who wants to relive a segment of Catawba County's rural heritage. A mill was on this site as early as 1873. A decade later, William Murray purchased one-half of the mill. In time, he and his sons, O.D. and John, would own the entire operation. By the early 1900s, they had turned the site into an industrial complex with the mill, a three-story granary, dry goods store, blacksmith shop and lumber business. Extensive changes were made at the mill site in 1912. A new three-story mill was built and a 24-foot concrete dam was erected. The most prosperous years of the mill followed a 1916 expansion, which added a fourth floor to the building. In 1940, the dam was raised and a larger water wheel was installed to provide more horsepower. The mill could then produce over 500 pounds of flour and 200 pounds of corn meal per hour. In 1967, the mill closed; but the Catawba County Historical Association later purchased the property and re-opened the mill as an operating museum.
